White Robes & Red Bows                                              #7

Jonathan & Daniel

Another product that will be available on thinkpierce.com in the future is original music presented with a unique twist. Music has been a big part of my life ever since 6th grade when I started playing drums on a practice pad.  But I wouldn’t say it was coincidence.  Since I was in diapers my father has worked as a college music professor and my mother as a private piano teacher.  It would be an understatement to say that I’ve attended my fair share of orchestra and choral concerts.  Those experiences allowed me to learn a unique and valuable skill that few people posses: how to properly read a classical concert program.  The average concert attendee would look at a program that appeared to have 6 songs and think, “oh yeah, I can totally handle this.  Six songs and we’re home free.”  But what I learned the hard way as a young kid was that those six songs are actually six “movements” each packed with an onslaught of “booby trap” songs that keep the concert going on and on for hours!! Ha ha, I joke about it, but those moments helped shape an appreciation for music in my life that continues today.

One of my early musical memories was another childhood experience most people could directly relate to; being dressed in a Christmas church robe as part of a headlining act in the yearly church Christmas concert.  That’s where the upper left photo comes in; that’s one of my best friends Daniel Sutliff and I getting ready to put on the Christmas production of a lifetime.  Daniel shared a similar upbringing. We’ve known each other since birth and when our middle school years rolled around, we were both getting in to music at the same time. To this day, I’ve played more music with Daniel than anyone else.

One day I ran across this picture and felt a fifteen-year anniversary photo shoot was in order.  Over the years Daniel had amassed a collection of various amps, and in my mind it was the perfect backdrop for a couple of modern day red bow rockers.  I  doctored up two bed sheets from the thrift store and purchased two giant red bows from a lawn and garden store intended for street lamp posts.  A friend brought his camera over and we took care of the rest.

Since middle school, Daniel hasn’t let up for one moment and is currently working on releasing two albums.  One of is his solo projects, goes by the name “Daniel(S)” and could be described as inspiring electronic music with live bass and guitar.  Visit the Daniel(S) myspace page here. Another exciting project is the upcoming release of the recently mixed “And There Stand Empires” album, which Daniel plays bass for. Check out Empires myspace page here. Both soon to be released albums represent groundbreaking music that any music lover could appreciate and respect.

Also to come will be a music project currently in the making at the thinkpierce factory.  For now though, I will refrain from sharing specific details.  Until then, brace yourselves for what Daniel(S) and Empires have in store for you in the near future and enjoy these photos that celebrate two friends whose first joint music venture started with a timeless combination of white robes and red bows…

A look into the past…                                                 #6

One Man Show Remodeling

Ever since creating the new business card for thinkpierce.com, I’ve been reminded of all of the business cards I’ve had from my remodeling days.  At the end of 2007 I was wrapping up two years of operating www.thinkpierce.com.  I was frustrated.  I was producing a lot of content, but I was also wearing myself out.  I didn’t know it at the time, but I needed a better balance, clearer direction and more business and technical insight.  All I knew was that I was overwhelmed with my own goals and needed a break.  In hindsight, if someone had slapped me around a bit and sent me back in to the ring, I probably would have kept going.  But that’s life.  In truth, because of what happened next, I gained both the technical and business insight I needed that helped shape the new direction my wife and I are headed in now.

Real Estate & Remodeling Cards

Shortly after I had thrown in the towel with thinkpierce for the time being, I was working for a woman named Betty Turner.   I had first met her during my early real estate days when I was interested in purchasing one of her properties.  Did I know exactly what I was doing?  No.  But the books I was reading at the time sure made me feel like I did! Lol.  I had run in to her again a couple years later at a local event and after one thing led to another I was helping her re-open a resale business she owned which sold furniture, collectibles and antiques.  One day I was walking with her down an isle of Home Depot picking up some supplies. I still remember the words she said to me, “Jonathan, you know what you should do?  You should start doing remodeling work and charge $30 an hour.” I don’t know why it clicked with me, but it did.  During those early real estate years, I had gotten my first taste of remodeling work when I bought my first three bedroom two bath investment property.  (There’s more to that story but I was 20 years old, as green as it gets, and didn’t make any money! ha ha). None the less had gained a hand full of remodeling experience.

Utica Remodeling Company

Ironically, a few days after Betty’s suggestion I received a call from someone that had known me in connection with that first residential investment I had done, asking if I did any remodeling work on the side, which I didn’t.  But after having the recent recommendation from Betty, my response was “Yeah, I charge $30 an hour”.  And the rest is history. Starting with a Ford Taurus and some hand tools, I went from starting with next to nothing to owning 3 work vehicles, adding 1 helper, and obtaining $10,000 + in tools a couple years later. Throughout that time, in addition to completing all kinds of remodeling jobs, I had personally completed four total home remodels, all including full kitchen and bathroom tear outs. Do you think I had the camera running during those remodeling jobs?  You bet I did, and it’s all headed your way in future thinkpierce.com posts!!

Thinkpierce Business Card

When the economy took a turn I was also getting ready to get married.  I was already beginning to change gears with a new idea, and after we got married, I sold off my vehicles and tools and we began working on some brand new ideas.  One of them was the reconstruction of thinkpierce.com. Having a remodeling business was the only thing I’ve done other than thinkpierce that I truly put myself in to and it will always be a part of me. I have many more remodeling stories to tell and am excited to share more pictures and video footage with you. For the time being, take a stroll down memory lane with  me and get a kick out of all of the business cards I had while remodeling, including the new thinkpierce business card I pass out today.  I’ve even included pictures of me on the site of that first remodeling job mentioned earlier that got it all started. I have some exciting things headed your way next week!  There’s always something new every friday at thinkpierce.com….stay tuned and get ready to laugh with next week’s surprise…

“The Cruiser”                                                                   #4

Picture 1

Here is the first of many photo shoots that will be available on thinkpierce.com.  In the previous version of thinkpierce.com, the photo gallery was a big part of the site and it will be in the new version as well. The photo shoots are a great way to depict something funny or creative under the Thinkpierce umbrella. In addition to new photo shoots like this one, I’ll also be re-introducing a smorgasbord of previous Thinkpierce photo shoots as well, each one with an inspiration all their own. This particular shoot titled “The Cruiser”, came about because up and coming photographer Sara Christian asked me to pose as an “angry customer” for a photo that was to be part of a school assignment.  When approaching me, she had no idea that I would instantly brainstorm another photo shoot of my own that we could do immediately afterword!! Luckily, she agreed.

Picture 2

My inspiration came from a couple of old Honda Accords I had purchased roughly 2 years ago. I had always wanted to do a photo shoot with one of the Honda’s in particular because it was so “classic”.   I brought Justin Kila in to the mix and what proceeded to be captured was the very essence of testosterone and adrenaline acceleration that occurs when two guys get around an awesome vehicle.  Our shoot which was in a parking lot across from Woodland Hills Mall, wouldn’t have been complete of course without a visit from mall security. Fortunately, after receiving an explanation that satisfied their concerns, they didn’t have to get the Feds involved. But if you ever want to light up every walkie talkie from the entrance of Macy’s to the exit of Dillard’s, just park your car across the street, get out a couple of ridiculous props, start posing like a rockstar and then wait for a concerned parking lot attendant decked out in a helmet and Oakleys to pull up in a Segway. Many more photo shoots are ahead.  Look forward to something new every Friday on thinkpierce.com
